Sports Therapy

Sports Therapy takes many forms. It covers Sports Massage through to corrective training both inside and outside the gym environment. 

The focus is to rehab an individual and restore their fitness to a place where they can achieve their full potential. In some cases, it can replace the need for surgery – see testimonials below.

Charlie is a fully qualified and insured Sports Therapist and Personal Trainer with over 20 years experience. She works alongside physios, doctors and consultants to ensure that her approach is the right one for you and will give you an honest appraisal of your condition. It may be that sports massage is required; it may be that your condition is best treated with a specific personal training programme and she will be able to advise you on this.

Sessions are available in her private treatment room and can be either 30 minutes to 1 hour in length.

Dear Charlie,

After over a year of personal training with you I feel the need to write and thank you for changing my life. I started PT with you because I had been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my shoulder (acromio-clavicular joint). Other longstanding injuries included tennis elbow and low back pain. I work as a doctor and whilst overall very fit, was struggling with my favourite sport (badminton) and in constant pain. I could only sleep on one side and was using regular pain killers. I’d got as far as seeing a surgeon who proposed an operation. All of my scientific reading concluded that physiotherapy doesn’t work, and I was resigned to an operation.

With that background started PT with you with a cynical attitude “I’ll try it but it won’t work”. I’d had PT before for brief periods over the years and never felt that the instructors quite clicked with me (50y man – good cardio fitness and various wear and tear niggles). They always seemed focussed on limited range strengthening exercises.

 

Your approach was different from the start. You listened and modified approach in a much more dynamic way than anyone before. You clearly tuned into what I was after (at that stage very focussed on shoulder because of pain). Imagine my surprise when you didn’t just go straight for the shoulder! I nearly walked away after the first couple of sessions. Then I began to get it. I clearly needed to look at everything from posture, core, balance, strengthening. Over and over again you drummed it home and worked around joints strengthening everywhere whilst looking at movement patterns.

Over time this method has produced amazing results for me. Surgery cancelled, no pain killers for 8 months. Your “methods” have infiltrated my entire life – at work when moving / bending over a patient, gardening, house chores. I now naturally consider movement patterns and core engagement when I do anything. It’s  a little disconcerting at first but the results can’t be sneezed at.

As a scientist I review and ask some questions:

1)      Is this all because I was ready to make that leap to taking PT more seriously?
2)      Would this have happened anyway – shoulder would have sorted itself?
3)      Would any other PT have achieved the same?

I conclude after consideration that it was your skill which moved me forward. I am convinced of that. Your physical PT skills combined with good listening and understating mean you are extremely good at what you do. I don’t think I would have got the same results elsewhere. A genuine thank you from me!
